Cocoa originates from South America and was used by the Mayans for ceremonial and health purposes. It is harvested from the cacao fruit tree, also known as Theobroma Cacao, in the same way as cacao.
Not to be confused with cacao, cocoa beans are heated to a higher temperature which removes the bitterness and creates a naturally sweet taste. As a result raw cacao has greater health benefits but the humble cocoa is still nutritionally rich and retains a large amount of antioxidants.
High in fibre, iron and magnesium cocoa also contains phenylethylamine and may boost serotonin levels which can help to act as a natural antidepressant. Cocoa is also a rich source of fibre and excellent for your heart and skin.
