Liquorice Root

Liquorice Roots

This herbaceous perennial, native to southern Europe and parts of Asia, has been cultivated for its valuable roots for thousands of years.  The liquorice root was used in many ancient civilisations from Egypt to China for its antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties  - it was often referred to as ‘the peacemaker’ herb.

Liquorice contains essential minerals and phytonutrients including magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium, beta-carotene and glycyrrhizin.  This time honoured remedy is thought to help relieve pain and stress, reduce inflammation and improve the immune system. Recent research has also proved liquorice root kills bad bacteria in the mouth, helping reverse initial signs of tooth decay and freshening breath.

It is used in a number of ways to aid digestion and ease various gastrointestinal and stomach conditions.  Due to liquorice’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it is used to treat colic, heartburn, and stomach ulcers and can work as a mild laxative.

Naturally sweet liquorice can provide support when feeling tired and run down.

There is research to show that the glycyrrhizic acid in liquorice root could help with depression and anxiety by promoting adrenal gland function and improving our resistance to stress.  The adrenal gland promotes a healthy level of cortisol within the body, which in turn supports our stress hormones, and helps preserve the body’s equilibrium.  Fatigue, depression and anxiety may be due to depleted hormone levels and liquorice can provide support when you feel tired or run down.

This richly sweet herb is perfect both pre and post workout and we have added generous amounts to our creamy turmeric blend GOLDEN.
