This herbaceous perennial, native to southern Europe and parts of Asia, has been cultivated for its valuable roots for thousands of years. The liquorice root was used in many ancient civilisations from Egypt to China for its antiviral, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties - it was often referred to as ‘the peacemaker’ herb.
Liquorice contains essential minerals and phytonutrients including magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium, beta-carotene and glycyrrhizin. This time honoured remedy is thought to help relieve pain and stress, reduce inflammation and improve the immune system.
