Turmeric

Turmeric

Traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine turmeric is well known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties which support the immune and digestive systems.

Turmeric comes from the rhizome of a plant in the ginger family.  It has a deep golden colour and a warm peppery flavour.  Hailed as one of the most powerful herbs in the world at fighting disease, its healing properties have been used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years to treat an array of conditions including heartburn, poor digestion, colds and depression.

Turmeric is a rich source of manganese, iron, vitamin B6, dietary fibre and potassium.  It also contains the active ingredient, curcumin, a natural anti-inflammatory which is commonly used to relieve joint and muscle pain and even help with headaches.

Curcumin stimulates the gallbladder and produces bile which in turn improves the ability to digest fats, reducing gas and bloating and leading to a healthy digestion.  It is also believed to improve skin hydration and improve conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and acne.

Research has suggested that turmeric’s wide ranging health benefits include improving liver function, supporting detoxification, preventing Alzheimer's, delaying the onset of Type 2 diabetes and reducing the risk of heart failure.
